Presanella Rock & Ice Climbing Guide - Southern Area

Val Ronchina, Val Dossón, Val Cèrcen, Val Gabbiolo, Val Nardìs, Val d'Àmola and Val Corniello

The Presanella massif is closely connected to the Adamello, separated only by the beautiful Val di Genova valley. Here lies the highest peak in the Trentino region, surrounded by glaciers and high walls of tonalite rock.

A fantastic playground for all types of alpinism: classic mountaineering, ice or mixed climbing, sport climbing or traditional climbing with plenty of adventure. Numerous routes have been opened up over the years, including by famous mountaineers such as Walter Bonatti, Carlo Mauri, Armando Aste and many more. Alpinists have always struggled with long and arduous ascents here. But not only that, a lack of information has also prevented many from visiting this region (the first and only guidebook made from 1985 has never been updated).

The aim of this guidebook is to describe all alpinist rock, ice and mixed routes as clearly and completely as possible, as well as the most important normal routes, which often serve as a return or descent route.

This work is intended to give the massif new visibility and make it easier for alpinists to reach it: after all, it is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled massifs in the southern Rhaetian Alps!

Francesco Salvaterra, born in 1989, lives in Tione di Trento, strategically located at the foot of Adamello-Presanella and the Dolomiti di Brenta. He is a full-time mountain guide and specializes in guiding in the local mountains. He also undertakes numerous trekking and mountaineering trips to the more remote corners of the world. As someone who likes to swim against the tide, he quickly fell in love with the less frequented and more challenging mountains of his homeland: the Presanella massif. Here, Franz grew into an alpinist and gained important experience for higher mountains such as Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy in Patagonia, where he climbs or accompanies clients every winter, during his many repetitions and new routes in the compact granite cracks and icy couloirs of these rocks. He has never stopped climbing in the tonalite rock of Presanella and this guidebook is the result of a long-cherished dream: to enhance these fantastic mountains that have so much to offer adventure lovers.
