Suunto – Finnish precision and design

Suunto's first product? Of course, a compass. Tuomas Vohlonen is dissatisfied with his compass's inaccuracy and erratic needle movements on his routes. Fortunately, Tuomas is not only an adventurer but also an engineer, and they developed a more precise, smoother liquid-filled compass and registered it directly for a patent in 1933; Suunto was finally founded in 1936. These compasses from Suunto would point the way to the future (suunta means direction/path). Suunto was born in the heart of Finland and remains proudly loyal to its homeland to this day.

Suunto: Driven by innovation, with a strong focus on precision and robustness

From its beginnings as a compass for walking, ships, and diving, Suunto has continued to develop and is now known for its GPS/multisport and diving watches. Every step in the development is driven by two fundamental building blocks of Suunto product development: precision and robustness. Milestones included the invention of the world's first diving compass. But Suunto would soon also set the standard in the watch sector.

Towards the end of the 90s, the Finns developed the first dive computer in a wristwatch format; shortly afterward, their first outdoor watch was launched. The Vector was also the first watch to have an altimeter, barometer, and compass in one. Suunto stands for innovation – nothing has changed in this regard over the decades. This is also evident in the current watch collection. In addition to the precision and robustness already mentioned, it impresses with a sleek, elegant design with high functionality and excellent ease of use. The Suunto Peak 9 is the smallest and thinnest watch the Finns have ever made and the most robust, with great battery power. Long hikes, ultra runs, and bike tours are no problem for it. Staying true to its roots with a sustainable approach

Suunto is no longer family-owned. It was sold to Amer Sports and Liesheng Technology in 2022, but the company is still based in Finland. The watches and other products are designed in Finland and continue to be made there. Most of the products are handmade using 100% renewable energy to maintain working conditions at the best possible level and reduce CO2 emissions as much as possible.

It's good to know that Suunto calculates the carbon footprint of its products from production to end of life. This allows everyone to assess the environmental impact of their new dream watch, for example. Furthermore, Suunto offsets this footprint through its partner Tree-Nation.
